FAQ
How do I know if I should begin counseling?
Anything that makes you feel so overwhelmed to the point of not being able to function is a possibility for counseling; other people may have noticed a change and suggested you need to get help; you have started using drugs, alcohol, food, or smoking as coping mechanisms; your relationships are failing at home, work, school; your performance at work or school has dropped; you are withdrawing from everyday life with other people; your appetite has changed or you are not sleeping well; you don’t feel safe; you are afraid; you do not have any support and feel you are alone…these are just a few signs.
What can I expect at my first meeting?
All of our sessions are tailored to fit your needs. In the first meeting, there will be a conversation about what brings you to counseling and a brief history of how long the problem has been there, what you have tried for treatment, and what has worked or not worked so far. You will have a chance to ask questions and see if this would be a good fit. We will work together to define goals and a treatment plan. Some issues can be resolved in a short amount of time, while other complex problems require a more in-depth approach, requiring a longer period of time to explore deeper issues. Afterwards, there is some brief paperwork and the scheduling of your next appointment.
How can therapy help me?
Therapy can help you cope with feelings and emotions, learn how to problem-solve, help change behavior patterns, learn to think in healthier ways, and overcome stress and anxiety that may be contributing to your symptoms. From therapy, you gain emotional support in uncovering past hurts and new insights into areas that may be holding you back. You begin to build peace of mind. This is only a small example of what is possible in therapy.
What are the benefits of therapy?
The benefits you obtain from therapy depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn - both in the counseling session and all week outside the counseling session. Information such as: new ways to cope, solve problems, improve self-esteem, manage thoughts and emotions, develop skills, and improve communication are just some of the many ways clients benefit from therapy.
How do I choose a counselor?
Trusting and feeling comfortable with your counselor is important to your success; I offer a brief 10-15 min. consultation by phone prior to the first visit for clients who need this as their first step. A client needs to know that the counselor understands why they are seeking counseling and that the counselor has knowledge of the problem and can offer solutions in order for it to be a good fit.
Do you take insurance?
I am an out of network provider and do not directly bill insurance companies. However, many insurance companies will provide out-of-network coverage for fees. I am happy to provide you with the invoice needed for you to file with your insurance company directly in order for you to receive reimbursement.
